What was once a sand and gravel quarry is now Civita, a 230-acre mixed-use community in the Mission Valley neighborhood of San Diego, California. The project, which is the last large urban infill project within the City of San Diego, has been designed as a sustainable, walkable, high-density urban village. Once completed, the community will include over 4,700 homes, almost 1 million square feet of retail, office, and a school site, as well as nearly 17 acres of parks.

The flagship Civita Park, when completed, will be 14-acres, providing numerous amenities for the community. The first phase was completed in April 2017 and has become a popular destination with a variety of unique recreational amenitiesIt has been recognized with several awards already, including an 2017 Orchid for Landscape Architecture and the Healthy Public Open Space Award by the Urban Land Institute San Diego/Tijuana.

The tour will be led by Glen Schmidt, President of Schmidt Design Group, the landscape architects for the park along with Mark Radelow, Vice President of Sudberry Properties, the owners and master developers of the community. The tour will begin with the history of the site and the Civita development along with the completed and future community development plans. Then participants will take an easy stroll around the first phase of the popular park learning about the amenities, historic themes, public art components, and other design choices.  A preview of the next phase of the park, which has just begun construction, will be presented as well. The formal part of the tour will end at that point.

Those interested and capable of a more strenuous hike, can join Glen in walking up the hill to view the completed off-leash dog park, large under-crossing mural, stairway, intermittent waterfall, as well as the large recreation center that has been completed for Civita residents.

The park is located on Civita Blvd east of Via Alta. Parking is located either in the park parking lot or on Civita Blvd.

Meet August 15, 2018 at 5:00 pm under the large amphitheater structure in the park.
